Rizoctonia root rot in Europe – concept for an IIRB trial series

Abstract

The soil-borne fungus Rhizoctonia solani is responsible for severe damage in agricultural and horticultural crops world-wide. In sugar beet the pathogen causes root and crown rot, a disease which has become increasingly important in the last few years. The attack leads to substantial losses in yield and quality. The capability for storage and the processing quality of the beet is diminished. In the medium term, growing Rhizoctonia resistant varieties seems to be a promising way to control the disease. In addition, the effects of agricultural measures to reduce spread and damage are being considered. The integrated control of root and crown rot is being studied in a joint project with 11 sugar beet research institutes in Europe, the United States and Chile, coordinated by IIRB Pests and Diseases study group. A range of susceptible and resistant varieties, combined with an antifungal seed treatment, is being tested on infested sites at more than 20 locations all over Europe. At the same time, the pathogen is being isolated from the experimental fields for characterization. The poster shows the symptoms of Rhizoctonia root and crown rot, presents data on the incidence of the disease in Europe, estimates the influence on sugar beet yield and processing quality, gives an ex-planation for the concept of the IIRB trial series and names the partners of the research project.
