Head of Institute
Prof. Dr Anne-Katrin Mahlein took over the management of the Institute for Sugar Beet Research on 1 April 2018. As an adjunct professor, Ms Mahlein is a member of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Georg-August University of Göttingen. She has been a co-opted professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Bonn since 2020. She teaches in the field of crop science with a focus on integrated pest management and digitalisation.
Ms Mahlein is involved in various advisory boards and committees including the Scientific Advisory Board of the Julius Kühn-Institute and the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Action Plan for the Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products (NAP) of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the PhenoRob Cluster of Excellence. Additionally, she serves as an external member of the Foundation Council for the Georg-August-University of Göttingen. She acts as a reviewer for international and national journals and funding institutions.
Ms Mahlein studied Agricultural Sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn, where she completed her PhD in 2011 within the DFG Research Training Group on the use of information technologies for precision plant protection. She habilitated in 2016 and was awarded the Venia Legendi in the field of Phytomedicine. She led an independent junior research group as part of the Crop.Sense.net competence network at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bonn. In 2016, she was awarded the Julius Kühn Prize of the German Phytomedical Society for her scientific achievements.
